On today’s episode of Redefining Motherhood, I share an important lesson I've been learning about the power of our self-talk and how the stories we tell ourselves can greatly impact our happiness and life experiences. Through recent conversations with my coach and fellow mom friends, I've come to realize how much negative thoughts on repeat can steal our joy without us even realizing it.
I had this recurring belief that I didn't belong in certain rooms or situations, even though there was no evidence of this. When my friend challenged me to examine where this was coming from, I realized it stemmed from childhood experiences of constantly feeling like an outsider when moving frequently.
Reflecting deeper, I see how those past experiences likely ingrained feelings of unworthiness that I've carried into my adult life without even realizing it. I’m now focused on identifying any areas where I may be subconsciously playing negative thoughts on repeat, which may be holding me back. I want to encourage other moms going through similar experiences to reflect on how you can flip the script and start believing in your own worthiness. Remember, you deserve to live a life you love!

Welcome back to another episode of Redefining Motherhood! Today on the show I have Joanne Bolt, the CEO and Founder of PodcastHer and Host of The B-Word Podcast. Joanne is a former consultant and real estate agent who is now on a mission to empower women. As a wife, mom, and business owner, she has reinvented herself throughout different seasons of motherhood. We discuss the challenges Joanne faced balancing her real estate career with young children, and the tension it caused with her traveling spouse. However, they worked through it with compromise. I was fascinated to learn how she pivoted into podcasting during the pandemic, despite never listening to one herself!
Joanne also opens up about the struggles of remote work during the pandemic and how it strengthened her family bonds. We share laughs over creative stress-relief methods for frustrated moms. Most inspiring was Joanne's encouragement to build a support system of moms to support you in varying seasons.
To learn more about how Joanne inspires women through podcasting and her PodcastHer network, subscribe to The B-Word Podcast and follow her on Instagram @itsjoannebolt. Thanks for joining us on the journey of Redefining Motherhood!

Today, on Redefining Motherhood, I discuss the prevalent issue of imposter syndrome, especially among women in leadership roles and working mothers. Imposter syndrome is when you feel unqualified or undeserving of your role or tasks, and it can manifest as a lack of confidence. An alarming 70% of people experience imposter syndrome at some point in their career, but women are disproportionately affected at around 62%. I believe this is due to societal pressures that still view women as caregivers first.
Balancing work and family life exacerbates these feelings. As a working mother myself, I experienced intense imposter syndrome after returning from maternity leave - I felt guilty for taking time off and like I was being held to a different standard than my male coworkers. Research shows that balancing multiple roles makes women more prone to imposter syndrome. I've learned it's important to acknowledge that my responsibilities have changed and give my best effort each day rather than an unrealistic 100%.
Some tips to cope with imposter syndrome include acknowledging it as a normal experience and talking to trusted friends or colleagues who can relate is so helpful. Focusing on accomplishments, qualifications, and positive feedback, counters feelings of inadequacy. Remember - you're not alone, and I want you to know that there are strategies that can mitigate imposter syndrome.

Welcome back to another episode of Redefining Motherhood! Today I want to have an important discussion about postpartum depression (PPD) in ambitious women. As many of you know, I've shared my own personal experience with postpartum depression and anxiety in the past. While I always considered myself an optimistic and happy person, I struggled immensely in the months following childbirth.
Recently, I spoke to a fellow ambitious mother about her story of postpartum depression. So many parts of her experience resonated with me, and it got me thinking about how we often miss the mark in discussing PPD among driven, goal-oriented women. The statistics and risk factors outlined by organizations like the CDC don't fully capture what ambitious mothers go through as we try to balance new motherhood with our careers, goals, and high standards.
In this episode, I dive deeper into my own postpartum journey, from not recognizing the signs of depression at first, to the challenges of seeking help. I also discuss the lack of support for working mothers transitioning back to their careers postpartum. It's time we had a long overdue update to pregnancy and postpartum guidelines, resources, and education. Most importantly, I want to emphasize that postpartum depression can affect any woman, no matter how happy or optimistic she seems. So don't hesitate to check in on others, and trust your own instincts if something feels off.
I hope that by sharing more stories like this, we can help reduce the stigma and raise awareness of this very real issue that impacts many mothers. Please feel free to reach out if you need someone to talk to. You don't have to suffer in silence.

Welcome back to another episode of Redefining Motherhood! Today I share some key insights from a discussion I had with a fellow working mother, who has been struggling with whether to leave her high-level career to spend more time with her baby girl. As ambitious women, it's easy to get caught up in what others may think of our choices or feel like we must constantly plan our next move. It's okay to give yourself permission to make the choice that feels right for your family's needs in this season, without worrying so much about the future.
The truth is, having gaps in employment is accepted now more than ever before with mental health and flexibility becoming priorities for many. In talking to other successful women in my industry who had taken time off after having children helped me realize it doesn't mean the end of your career progression. Many of those same women are now CEOs or C-Suite executives after having taken a year or more away when their kids were young. This opened my eyes to see that taking a break doesn't have to negatively impact your future opportunities.
My hope is that more women will give themselves the space and time to truly understand what they need without feeling stressed. Whether it's a new job role that's more flexible or staying home, put parameters around your break so you can fully recharge without overthinking the next steps. You deserve to prioritize your happiness and find purpose on your own timeline.

Welcome to another episode of Redefining Motherhood! In today’s episode, I’m sharing my journey of overcoming perfectionism and fear to start a family while also pursuing my career goals.
For many years I delayed motherhood because I worried it would negatively impact my success in my male-dominated industry. As an ambitious woman, I felt I had to choose between having a family or advancing in my career. I was also paralyzed by the fear of not having everything perfectly figured out as a working mom.
It wasn't until I started opening up about these fears that real change began. Discussing my struggles with my coach led me to research other women leaders who had successfully balanced high-powered careers with motherhood. To my surprise, there were many inspiring examples of women thriving in both areas. Seeing this gave me hope that I too could make it work.
Of course, my journey to motherhood was far from perfect. It took years of trying before I learned I had a physical issue preventing pregnancy. Becoming a mom later than expected caused its own challenges. However, it also helped shift my mindset around expectations and perfectionism.
Today, I feel incredibly fulfilled having found a way to prioritize both my career and family. My message to other women is to not let fears stop you from living according to your values. With perseverance and focus on living authentically, it is possible to have both success and a loving family on your own terms. I hope my story provides hope and encouragement for any woman struggling to balance it all.

In this episode of Redefining Motherhood, I discuss the difference between motivation and discipline. For so long, I believed that my success was due to sheer motivation, but over time I realized the key was developing discipline.
I explain how discipline carries you through even on days when motivation is low. True discipline is doing what needs to get done whether you feel like it or not.
You’ll learn why committing to your goals and building supporting habits is so important for cultivating discipline. I discuss how consistency over a long period of time is what really builds your "discipline muscle". It's about showing up for yourself each day through discipline, not motivation alone. For anyone wanting to improve in certain areas of their life, I encourage identifying where more discipline is needed and deciding to commit fully.
I hope that you’ll walk away from this episode understanding that discipline is a skill that can be developed through daily effort, just like any other muscle to improve your own success and well-being.

In this episode of Redefining Motherhood, I discuss the spousal guilt I've been feeling when traveling for work. As a working mom in a sales and business development role, I'm required to travel frequently which I used to enjoy before becoming a mom. Now that I have my son, I find myself feeling guilty for putting the single-parent workload on my husband while I'm away. While I don't mind leaving my son, I stress constantly about how my husband is handling everything alone.
I've tried setting a rule to only travel for 2 nights maximum but still struggle with enjoying myself on trips. After talking to my therapist, she suggested I have an open conversation with my husband about how he truly feels when I'm gone. I know communication is important, but finding the time can be challenging, especially for difficult conversations.
I want to enjoy my career while also prioritizing my family. After recording this episode, I'm motivated to talk to my husband to relieve some of the guilt I've been carrying. For any other working moms who can relate, don't be afraid to communicate with your partner or boss to find a better balance. I hope this episode helps you. Remember, together, let’s redefine what it means to be a mother.
